Miguel Cotto

For a long, long time, Miguel Cotto has been one of my most loved warriors. All things considered, I don’t choose not to see to the reactions one can require against his record, especially after his whipping on account of Manny Pacquiao in 2009.

Wins: Yuri Foreman, old Ricardo Mayorga, one-looked at Antonio Margarito, Delvin Rodriguez, one-legged Sergio Martinez, Daniel Geale, Yoshihiro Kamegai

Misfortunes: Floyd Mayweather, Austin Trout, Canelo Alvarez

He gave Mayweather a good fight, better than the vast majority of Mayweather opponents who weren’t being carried to presentability in order to not suffer a fan revolt over a $100 pay-per-view. He gave Canelo a terrific fight, a lot of people argued he should have gotten the nod. And Trout, a good fighter, just wound up a stylistic matchup nightmare for Cotto.

Good for Cotto, though, that Sadam Ali on paper belongs to that “wins” group far more than the “losses” group.

Look, this is being billed as a farewell fight. Miguel Cotto is 37, he’s won world titles in four weight classes over his career, and he’s not looking to go out with a loss, or perhaps even a particularly difficult night. He’s been through the wars. He’s put in his time. He’s given a lot to boxing.  He wants to say goodbye at Madison Square Garden, which has been a professional home for him since his first fight in the building back in 2005, when he beat Muhammadqodir Abdullaev in a WBO 140-pound title defense.

I’ve greatly enjoyed Miguel Cotto’s career and he’ll always be one of my personal favorite fighters. He’s been involved in some of my favorite nights over the last 11 years running this web site. Cotto vs Ali

But I cannot say that I have any real anticipation for this fight, no.

Sadam Ali

“World Kid” Ali is a guy who was once seen as an intriguing prospect, but that bubble was burst — hard — when he stepped up in competition in March 2016 against Jessie Vargas.

Vargas isn’t a big puncher. Vargas isn’t a “dominating” sort of fighter. Vargas beat Ali up, dropping him twice en route to a ninth round stoppage.

It wasn’t like there were never signs of trouble, though. Ali was dropped in the first round of a 2013 fight against Jay Krupp. He’d struggled a fair bit in a split decision win over Jeremy Bryan in 2014.  Cotto vs Ali Wins over Luis Carlos Abregu and Francisco “Chia” Santana in 2014-15 were stronger performances, but Vargas was too much for him.

And what’s Ali done since then? Three straight wins, over Saul Corral, Jorge Silva, and Johan Perez.

Does Sadam Ali “deserve” this fight with Miguel Cotto? Well, no. Not if you’re trying to make logical sense of things. Cotto holds a 154-pound title. Ali, for one thing, is not a true world title contender, having done nothing that suggests he is, and for another thing, he’s never even fought at 154 pounds. (OK, once, in 2010.)

But boxing is boxing, as you all know, and title shots and big fights go to the “undeserving” all the time. The best we can hope is that Sadam Ali can make a fight of it, that he can show the talent he was once hyped to possess, that he can at least give Cotto a legitimate challenge. That’s the hope for fans, anyway. Cotto vs Ali

Cowboys vs Redskins

Cowboys vs Redskins | Predictions for Thursday’s Dallas Cowboys-Washington Redskins game from The Dallas Morning News‘ panel of experts:

Cowboys vs Redskins

Tim Cowlishaw

A tale of two 5-6 teams. The Redskins continue to play hard but are licking too many wounds. The Cowboys haven’t run the ball that poorly without Zeke and should be able to sustain enough drives to turn the corner in this one. Cowboys, 19-16.

Brandon George

In case you haven’t noticed: The train is off the track for the Cowboys with three consecutive blowout losses. And with linebacker Sean Lee and running back Ezekiel Elliott still out, the Cowboys will have a hard time getting it back together anytime soon. This time, the Cowboys keep it close as the offense shows signs of life, but the secondary will still struggle as Washington QB Kirk Cousins wins this one in the end. Redskins, 27-24.

Barry Horn

Good news for the few readers — and you know who you are — who believe my prediction has any bearing on the outcome of a Cowboys game. I’m thinking the Cowboys will rally to beat the Redskins in their lone Thursday night game of the season. The battle of 5-6 teams appears winnable for the home team.

The Cowboys cannot again be possibly as inept as they have been in their past three games. They have had a full week to prepare for the Redskins, whose one-game win streak comes courtesy of the hapless New York Giants.

Dez Bryant rises from the ashes. Alfred Morris runs as well as Alfred Morris can run. DeMarcus Lawrence and David Irving play doomsday defense. And, of course, Dan Bailey returns to kick the game-winning field goal. Cowboys, 24-21.

Kate Hairopoulos

The Redskins know what it is like to lose key players. Waves of them. They’ve remained competitive somehow and are the same 5-6 as these troubled Cowboys. Fans call for adjustments from Dallas,  Cowboys vs Redskins but it’s too little, too late. The losing streak continues; the panic worsens. Zeke isn’t back for two more games after Thursday. The season’s done. Redskins, 35-17.

Jon Machota

Considering the Redskins are the only team the Cowboys have defeated without Ezekiel Elliott or Tony Romo in the starting lineup over the past four years, I should pick Dallas. But things have been far too lopsided for me to go against the trend. Since 2014, the Cowboys are 33-9 with Elliott or Romo in the starting lineup. Without either: 1-16. Redskins, 21-14.

David Moore

Can the Cowboys win this game? Sure. Based on what’s transpired the past three weeks, if Dallas jumps to a 23-point halftime lead — opponents have outscored the Cowboys 72-6 in the second half of this stretch — that should be enough. But when you consider the Cowboys have only scored a total of 22 points in the past three games… Redskins, 24-19.

Kevin Sherrington

After three weeks of a nice, tight death spiral, the Cowboys finally put a stop to their losing ways. Cowboys vs Redskins The Redskins are just the team to do it, too. By now, even the Cowboys’ coaching staff has figured out most of the corrections that need to be made in Zeke’s absence, and it starts with acting like he’s still available. Cowboys, 24-21.

Bob Sturm

Surely, this team will respond to the most difficult stretch they have put together in modern Cowboys history with one last stand against a chief rival with jobs and futures on the line. Washington has lost a key player to their offense seemingly every week and finally has become easier to defend. Dallas does just enough to pull back to .500. Cowboys, 24-20.

Patriots vs Dolphins

Patriots vs Dolphins Live Stream | Chances are the Patriots will lose one of their last six diversions this season.

As Rich Hill called attention to on Pats Pulpit, the Patriots have just gone undefeated in the AFC East twice under Bill Belichick — in 2007 and 2012. Be that as it may, with five of their six confrontations for 2017 coming amid the last extend of the season, one may figure the yearly inconvenience in Miami on a Monday night may happen. Or, then again the intermittent, bewildering choices to be made against the Jets since… .well, for what reason did he choose to commence in extra minutes at any rate?

Fourteen-and-two, with a compass of the lamentable division and a win in Pittsburgh against the 8-2 Steelers appears to be consistent. Be that as it may, the Patriots for the most part have a hiccup each year around this time. Keep in mind surrendering home-field advantage two seasons back, prompting another tragic visit to Denver in the AFC title amusement?Patriots vs Dolphins

The current week’s picks

Greg Cote, Miami Herald: Patriots 31, Dolphins 17. “This is near about as large as NFL point spreads get, yet it isn’t Alabama facilitating Font of Tears Bible College. This is King Sport, where anyone (aside from the Browns, obviously) can beat anyone. Not saying will. Be that as it may, can. Also, more so in division competitions. Both of New England’s 2017 misfortunes have been in not-impervious Foxborough, and Tom Brady has been caught more circumstances by Miami in his vocation (21) than any other individual. Taps cleared Fins last season, yet Miami beat NE at any rate once each of the three earlier years.

Patriots vs Dolphins

Likewise, Patriots’ pass resistance is normal, and their run barrier may be the most exceedingly terrible in the group. The point: Miami, a group that won in Atlanta, is fit for shaking off four continuous misfortunes with its execution of the year Sunday. Also, that is whether Jay Cutler (blackout convention) begins or whether Matt Moore does. This conviction is the reason I like the Dolphins with the focuses, if not exactly by and large. I figure Miami will demonstrate some spine and contend hard Sunday. Be that as it may, there is excessively ability deficit — particularly amongst Brady and Cutler/Moore — to figure Miami will win inside and out at this setting for the first since 2008. The temperature Sunday up there is estimate for the low 30s. So is the Patriots’ point add up to, oh dear.” Patriots vs Dolphins

Pete Prisco, CBS Sports: Patriots 33, Dolphins 13. “The Patriots have pretty much locked up the division, and now are playing for a top seed. The Dolphins are in a tailspin and might have to start Matt Moore at quarterback here. The Patriots continue to roll behind Tom Brady. Blowout.”

CBS Sports staff: Seven out of eight pick New England (-16.5 Patriots). Everybody likes the Pats straight-up.

David Steele, Sporting News: Patriots 33, Dolphins 16. “Teams still pile up yards against the Patriots defense (last in total yards), yet in their six straight wins, they haven’t given up more than 17 points in a game. No one knows which Dolphins offense will show up in Foxborough — which quarterback, in particular. Neither Matt Moore nor Jay Cutler appear to stand a chance at putting pressure on Tom Brady to keep up.”

Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News: Patriots 40, Dolphins 14. “You know the Patriots are getting close to can’t-miss Super Bowl favorites when the spreads start ballooning past two touchdowns. Miami is an absolute mess, far removed from the second AFC East playoff team under Adam Gase a season ago. The Dolphins’ defense has numerous holes for Tom Brady to exploit, while New England’s suddenly sound defense will stop whoever is quarterback the other side.”

SB Nation staff: All Pats.

Chris Simms, Bleacher Report: Patriots 35, Dolphins 17. “Let’s be honest, the New England Patriots are going to win this game. I am a little concerned, though, that the Patriots have been on the road for two weeks. They stayed in Colorado for a week, had a long trip to Mexico and then a long trip back home. Bill Belichick referenced this fact in his early-week press conference. Fatigue could be a factor. With all that said, though, this is still the best team in football right now. New England is hot and has fixed its defensive problems, and I have no faith in the Dolphins’ ability to consistently move the ball.”

Buccaneers vs Falcons Live

Buccaneers vs Falcons Live | The Atlanta Falcons (6-4) will go for their third straight win off a short week when they have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6) in a NFC South matchup on Sunday as expansive home top choices. The Falcons hung on for a 34-31 street triumph against the Seattle Seahawks in a week ago’s Monday night diversion in the wake of seeing restricting kicker Blair Walsh miss a potential amusement tying field objective.

Why the Buccaneers can cover the spread

Tampa Bay has won three of the previous four gatherings with Atlanta both straight up and against the spread. The Buccaneers head into the main matchup between the groups this season on a two-diversion winning streak in the wake of losing five out of a column, developing their certainty with reinforcement quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick under focus.

Starter Jameis Winston stays out because of shoulder damage, and Fitzpatrick has demonstrated once more that he can keep his group in diversions and win them.

Why the Falcons can cover the spread

The Falcons seem to be finally finding their stride offensively, averaging just over 30 points in winning their last two games. The defending NFC champions will be playing their next three games at home and likely need to win all of them if they want to make it back to the postseason.

Their next two games will be against current division leaders in the Minnesota Vikings and the New Orleans Saints before facing the Bucs again in Week 15. Atlanta cannot afford to lose either game versus Tampa, especially this one.Buccaneers vs Falcons Live

Buccaneers vs Falcons Live

Smart pick

The Bucs have dropped six of their last seven road games while the Falcons have won six of eight at home. Both home losses for Atlanta during that stretch came against AFC East teams they were not familiar with earlier this season.

The Falcons have gone 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS in their previous six divisional games, and five of their last six games this year are versus NFC South foes. Look for Atlanta to win and cover this game to continue the team’s late run toward successfully defending the division title.

NFL betting trends

The Buccaneers are 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four games against the Falcons.

The Buccaneers are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games on the road against the Falcons.

The total has gone OVER in 11 of the Falcons’ last 14 games at home. Buccaneers vs Falcons Live

Following a light heavyweight title reign that spanned more than three years and featured eight successful defenses, polished Russian knockout artist Kovalev, 34, is eager to reclaim the belts he lost in 2016 to future Hall of Famer Andre Ward. Kovalev vs Shabranskyy Live

Standing in his way is Ukraine’s Shabranskyy, 30, who turned pro in 2012 after a long amateur career in his home country and has been knocking out top contenders on the way to his biggest fight to date. Both men have been active lately, this being Kovalev’s tenth fight since Jan. 2014 and Shabranksyy’s tenth fight since Jan. 2015. The bout marks Kovalev’s 11th appearance on HBO, while Shabranskyy is making his debut on the main channel after fighting on HBO Latino in 2015.

Kovalev vs Shabranskyy Live

In the co-main event, one of the top light heavyweight contenders, Sullivan Barrera (20-1, 14 KOs) of Miami via Cuba, closes out his tremendous 2017 by taking on Felix Valera (15-1, 13 KOs) of the Dominican Republic in a ten-round fight. Barrera, 35, is fresh off the biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision victory over Joe Smith Jr. in July and hopes to set himself up for another title shot in 2018 by defeating Valera. Making his U.S. debut, the hard-punching Valera, 29, seeks  an upset that would insert him into the light heavyweight championship conversation. Kovalev vs Shabranskyy Live

Sosa is making his third HBO appearance, while the bout marks Gamboa’s tenth fight on HBO.

Kovalev vs Shabranskyy

Kovalev vs Shabranskyy | Previous bound together light heavyweight titleholder Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, returning off to-back misfortunes to Andre Ward in bitter world title battles, is coming back to the ring hoping to start another section of his profession.

Fight Time

Kovalev will go up against Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in a 10-round light heavyweight session on Nov. 25 (HBO, 10 p.m. ET/PT) at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, Main Events declared on Saturday night amid HBO’s Srisaket Sor Rungvisai-Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez rematch broadcast.

In November, Kovalev lost his three 175-pound world title belts and undefeated record by questionable choice to Ward and afterward got thumped out in the eighth round of the rematch in June. Kovalev vs Shabranskyy

Presently he’s on the rebound trail and said the misfortunes have made him more grounded.

“I took in a great deal from my battles with Andre Ward,” Kovalev said. “When you don’t win and when you endure misfortune, it makes you more grounded. It additionally demonstrates to you who your genuine companions are. I have an inclination that I wiped out my life and now I’m prepared to begin new. I’m exceptionally eager to get back in the ring, and battle at Madison Square Garden out of the blue, and I’m centered around what’s to come. I’m not thinking back.”

Before coming back to the United States from a late spring in Russia, Kovalev invested energy at a cloister in Greece to clear his head and get ready rationally and profoundly for his arrival to boxing, as indicated by Main Events.Kovalev vs Shabranskyy

One major change for Kovalev (30-2-1, 26 KOs), 34, a Russia native fighting out of Los Angeles, is the likely end of his association with longtime trainer John David Jackson. Their relationship was rocky going into the rematch with Ward and now appears fractured beyond repair given comments both have made. Who Kovalev’s new trainer will be is unclear.

Kovalev vs Shabranskyy

“The Theater at Madison Square Garden is really a perfect place for Sergey to start the next chapter of his career,” Main Events CEO Kathy Duva said. “He needs to go out and remind people why they love the ‘Krusher.’ Sergey is an exciting fighter who is a pleasure to watch in the ring, and that’s what everyone is going to see on Nov. 25.”

Shabranskyy (19-1, 16 KOs), 30, a native of Ukraine fighting out of Los Angeles, is a powerful puncher like Kovalev. He has won two fights in a row since suffering a seventh-round knockout loss to contender Sullivan Barrera in December.

“I’ve been waiting for this fight a long time. I will take this chance to show everyone my abilities and qualities in the ring,” Shabranskyy said. “My coach, Manny Robles, and I have been working on movement and defense, which together with my natural power will be more than enough to defeat a great fighter such as Kovalev. I’m proud to represent USA and Ukraine at this fight.”

Said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, Shabranskyy’s promoter: “Vyacheslav Shabranskyy is back, and ready to prove he will do everything to climb to the top, including facing a top-level fighter such a Kovalev. Shabranskyy is stronger and smarter inside the ring, and will show off his mastered talent when he faces Sergey. We are excited to partner with Kathy Duva and the Main Events team yet again for an amazing show that will no doubt bring the action.”

While the deal is not yet finalized, the HBO co-feature is likely to be a junior lightweight fight between former world titleholder and all-action brawler Orlando Salido (44-13-4, 31 KOs), 36, of Mexico, and former featherweight world title challenger Jonathan Oquendo (27-5, 17 KOs), 34, of Puerto Rico. Salido was on hand at the Sor Rungvisai-Gonzalez rematch at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, with manager Sean Gibbons and promoter Fernando Beltran to meet with HBO in an effort to finalize his end of the fight.

New Zealand vs Wales Live

New Zealand vs Wales Live | Wales have flattered to deceive so far this autumn. They wasted far too many opportunities in defeat to Australia and that was followed up by a very unconvincing display against Tier 2 nation Georgia.

Presently the All Blacks move into Cardiff. They were ran near to Scotland in Edinburgh a weekend ago, and Steve Hansen will be sharp for his side to put in a greatly improved execution in Cardiff as he goes head to head against Warren Gatland out of the blue since the Lions Tour.

Group News:

Warren Gatland rearranged his group against Georgia, yet the enormous names have been reestablished to the XV for the standoff against the All Blacks. Alun Wyn Jones comes back to commander the side in a forward pack that is unaltered from Wales’ thrashing to Australia a fortnight prior. Scott Williams and Rhys Webb are the main survivors from the side that scratched past Georgia a week ago.

All Blacks captain Kieran Read will miss New Zealand’s last Test of 2017 – a hip issue sees him pass up a major opportunity. Venturing up to chief the side out of the blue is bolt Sam Whitelock, who advances beyond Beauden Barrett and Sam Cane. While Read is out, Rieko Ioane gives better news to the All Blacks – the winger begins subsequent to making a startling recuperation from a shoulder issue endured against Scotland. New Zealand vs Wales Live

Wales: Halfpenny, Amos, S. Williams, O. Williams, S. Evans, Biggar, Webb; R. Evans, Owens, Francis, Ball, A.W. Jones, Shingler, Navidi, Faletau.

Substitutions: Dacey, W. Jones, Brown, Hill, Tipuric, Davies, Priestland, Roberts.

New Zealand: McKenzie; Naholo, Crotty, S.B. Williams, Ioane; B Barrett, Smith; Hames, Taylor, Laulala, Tuipulotu, Whitelock, Squire, Cane, Whitelock

Substitutions: Harris, Crockett, Tu’ungafasi, S Barrett, Todd. Perenara, Sopoaga, Lienert-Brown

Key match-up: Hallam Amos vs. Rieko Ioane

No-one expected Ioane to play against Wales, but his presence is going to provide a huge boost for the All Blacks. It remains to be seen whether his shoulder causes him any jib come Saturday, but New Zealand’s star winger strikes fear into any opponent that he faces.

New Zealand vs Wales Live

Battling against Ioane will be a stern test for Amos, a rising star in his own right. Tries against both Australia and Georgia have seen the 23-year-old handed a starting spot against the All Blacks, and the New Zealanders will certainly be keeping an eye on the Dragons wing. With Liam Williams injured, it will be crucial for Wales that Amos continues his great form.

Key Stats

* Wales have not beaten New Zealand since 1953 — the same year that saw Sir Edmund Hillary climb Mount Everest.

* The All Blacks are looking for their 30th consecutive victory over Wales.

* Four of Wales’ starting XV — Rhys Webb, Ken Owens, Alun Wyn Jones and Taulupe Faletau — have already beaten New Zealand this year, with the British & Irish Lions in Wellington.

Weather

Cloudy with sunny spells in Cardiff, but cold.

Prediction

Both sides have had unconvincing autumns. The All Blacks have not been at their free-flowing best and Wales have been far too error prone. Steve Hansen laid into his players after their display against Scotland, and with his words ringing in the player’s ears, they should have far too much for a Wales side in transition.

Wales vs New Zealand

Wales vs New Zealand | WARREN Gatland, the former New Zealand hooker who coaches Wales, doesn’t believe the All Blacks are ever vulnerable. The flatterer also said this week they could put out a fourth, fifth or sixth best side and still beat most other teams.

Gatland was purring because he didn’t want to rile up New Zealand before their rugby Test in Cardiff on Saturday (Sunday 4.15am AEDT).Wales has lost 29 successive Tests to New Zealand, including 10 on Gatland’s watch.

But if he had said they were vulnerable, nobody could argue with him. Since beating South Africa 57-0 in mid-September, when some observers believed the All Blacks were occupying another universe, the team has come back to earth. Wales vs New Zealand

— Australia in Brisbane ended a two-year losing drought to the All Blacks.

— France rallied from 31-5 down at halftime to 31-18 and lost the momentum after a try was disallowed. Wales vs New Zealand

— And lastly, Scotland outplayed the All Blacks for long periods last weekend but failed when it mattered most.

Wales vs New Zealand

The All Blacks have been vulnerable, and lost two tTsts this year for the first time since 2011. But even in the face of yellow cards, penalties, and a welter of handling errors, the All Blacks have still proved tough to take out.

Newcomers have had an immediate effect, even when teamwork has taken time to gel.

That’s been the positive for coach Steve Hansen.

“I thought 2016 would be a tough year (after the post-Rugby World Cup retirements) but we got through it pretty well and unscathed from an adversity point of view, apart from Chicago,” Hansen said. Wales vs New Zealand
